Meramec Caverns ΓÇó It is totally worth the short side trip to see this famous Route 66 site and to take the spectacular tour.  The caverns were opened to tourists in 1935 by Lester Dill, entrepreneur extraordinaire.  He tirelessly promoted the caverns, drawing in tourists from just about everywhere.  Meramec Caverns had advertisments on barns in over 40 states.  Located at Exit 230 off I-44, tel# 314-468-3166
